The female hormone endocrine system consists of the ductless glands, or the glands of internal secretions, which include the hypothalamus, pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, adrenals, and ovaries. In general the hormone endocrine system is in charge of body processes that happen slowly, such as cell growth. Hormones are the foundation of the endocrine system. They are the chemical messengers that transfer information and instructions from one set of cells to other sets of cells. Hormones can be influenced by factors such as stress, infection, and changes in the balance of fluids and minerals in the blood. Endocrine glands release more than twenty major hormones directly into the bloodstream where they can be transported to cells in other parts of the body.

The hypothalamus is the primary link between the nervous system and the endocrine system and the key to any successful weight loss program. The hypothalamus relays information sensed by the brain to the pituitary. Nerve cells in the hypothalamus control the pituitary gland by producing chemicals that either stimulate or suppress hormone secretions from the pituitary gland. The pituitary then makes other hormones, such as endorphins, that control several other endocrine glands. This small pituitary gland has an anterior and posterior lobe. The anterior lobe regulates the activity of the thyroid, adrenals and reproductive glands, producing growth hormone, prolactin, thyrotropin, and corticotropin. The posterior lobe produces anti-diuretic hormone which regulates the kidney, the bonding hormone oxytocin, and regulates the body's sodium/potassium balance.

The pituitary and hypothalamus glands are the essential controlling factors that measure our blood sugar levels. When we eat, the pituitary gland tells the pancreas to make and send insulin, because blood sugar cannot get into the cell by itself. These essential blood sugars need the help of insulin produced and secreted by the pancreas. The pancreas also makes glucagon, and along with insulin, these hormones work together to maintain a steady level of glucose in the blood to keep the body supplied with fuel and maintain stores of energy for when needed.

The third member of this endocrine trio, the pineal gland, is the great producer of melatonin. This hormone regulates waking and sleeping cycles, and the pineal is a master light sensor that regulates the body's bio-rhythms.

The thyroid gland produces many vital hormones such as thyroxine, tri-iodothyronine and thyro-calcitonin. These hormones control the rate at which cells burn fuel. Thyroid hormones also play a key role in bone growth and brain/central nervous system development. This hormone called thyro-calcitonin is the main regulator of blood calcium into the bones and is the primary function of the parathyroid nodes of the thyroid which release this parathyroid hormone into the bloodstream.

The adrenal glands have two main parts. The adrenal cortex produces corticosteroids for anti-inflammation. They also help to regulate salt and water balance in the body, monitor the body's response to stress, check the general metabolism, immune system and govern sexual development and function. The medulla of the adrenal produces catecholamines such as epinephrine a major vaso-dilator.

The female ovaries secrete androgens, testosterone being one androgen. Women need only one-tenth the level of testosterone than do their male counterparts. Testosterone is a vital androgen that regulates body changes associated with sexual development, among other things. The ovaries produce eggs and secrete the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. These hormones are involved with pregnancy and proper regulation of the menstrual cycle...see chart below for a full description and discussion.

What is Estrogen?

There is no such thing as “estrogen” per se; it is just a convenient term to use for collectively talking about the total estrogen levels. While there are over two dozen estrogenic hormones, there are only three human estrogens we need to be concerned with.

Estriol (E3), comprises approximately 90% of human female estrogen and is the most plentiful, the safest, and the most beneficial.

Estrone (E1) only comprises about 5% of human female estrogen. It is a powerful estrogen and can be made from soybeans, wild yam, and licorice to be chemically identical to human estrone. Overweight women often produce an excessive amount of this, resulting in estrogen imbalance. It is uncommon to find a deficiency of this.

Estradiol (E2) also comprises about 5% of human female estrogen and it is the most powerful, most dangerous, and most carcinogenic in nature. Estradiol is twelve times more potent than estrone and a full 80 times more potent than estriol. Again, overweight women often produce excessive amounts of this which can have serious side effects. This can also be synthesized from soybeans, wild yam, and licorice, to be chemically identical to estradiol found in humans. It is uncommon to find a deficiency of this.

What is Progesterone?

We need to understand that whenever we use supplements of any kind – vitamins, minerals, hormones, we need to use the natural form in such doses as to maintain normal levels and rebuild and tone the endocrine organs that make hormones.
If we want to practice life extension we can even maintain the youthful levels of some hormones that we enjoyed in our youth.

Nearly all supplements of any kind are “sin-thesized” or we couldn’t afford them. Some ignorant scientists say they are chemically identical to the molecule as it occurs in nature. “Sin–thetic” Vitamin C, for example, is about $4 a pound compared to natural Vitamin C extracted from fruit at about $500 a pound. The molecules, however, are not identical in any way! Natural progesterone is generally synthesized from either the diosgenin in wild yams (Dioscorea species) or the sterols in soybeans and licorice and costs over $200 a pound. These sources are completely identical to human progesterone chemically and biologically; Nature Knows.

Unfortunately, unscrupulous promoters have put plain yam extract (diosgenin) into creams and claim they are “precursors” and biologically convert mysteriously to progesterone in the body. This is known as “yam scam” in the trade. Avoid any cream product with the word “yam” or words “wild yam” on the label. The label must clearly state exactly how many milligrams of USP (U.S. Pharmacopia) natural progesterone are in the product, or don’t buy it. A 2 oz jar or tube of cream should contain about 800-1000 mg of progesterone.

Progesterone is not absorbed orally as the liver breaks it down into byproducts. Injections, nasal sprays, sublingual tablets or suspensions and vaginal/anal suppositories are not popular for various reasons. Fortunately, transdermal (through the skin) creams are extremely effective and safe. Without a doubt, transdermal creams are the easiest, most effective, safest and most convenient way to use natural progesterone.

Using a good cream during days 12-26 of your cycle (day 1 is the first day of your period) follows the natural pattern of normal cyclical progesterone production. A ½ teaspoon will give you about 30 mg a day of which 20-25 mg will be transferred through the skin into your bloodstream bypassing the breakdown by the liver. After menopause you can also use ½ teaspoon any two weeks of the month as the tube will last about two months this way.

It is crucial to use natural hormones in natural ways to maintain normal levels in order to stay in the best of health.
